A Beautiful and Well Balanced Singing Bow!

Xavier’s iStrad French Bow is another renaissance creation by the multitalented Xavier Foley. This bow is bit longer, much lighter and well balanced, producing buttery singing legato sounds as well as crisp staccato runs. Its balance bounces well for spiccato passages making it a real pleasure to play.
I really like the unique black and white hair which is smooth at first and grips more throughout the initial break in time.
To expedite the hair grip break in period I used a newer Pop’s Rosin and sandpaper, about 80-90 grit to rub on top of the rosin to produce white rosin powder.
Then apply to the new bow hair well from frog to tip.
Then put the bow into action on the strings and repeat to expedite the bow grip and become accustomed to the increased playability of this beautifully crafted iSTRAD bow.
Xavier has hit it out of the park with this bow creation as well as his contemporary and soulful music writings in the spirit of Bach to Bottesini and beyond!

A real step forwards in bow construction

As an international customer the bow took some time to arrive (mainly due to the Miami sorting office). But I must say, it’s been well worth the wait. I’m normally a German (Hungarian) bow player and this is my first step back into French bow playing after a VERY long time. I really like the weight of the bow (it sits on the string without any pressure from the hand or arm which is really important to avoid hand and arm strain). Also the balance point is about an inch ahead of the silver binding, which is just right. The combination of white hair with the dark stripe down the centre is really clever: There is real projection of sound which makes the bow useful in a range of circumstances. I don’t know what kind of bow hair this is but I’ve never come across anything like for clarity. Overall, the construction really is first class and, with the help of the bow, it only took an afternoon to make my bass sing. Xavier and Florida Violins LLC have done an amazing job with this bow. This is a real step forwards in bow construction.

As you have stated, the balance point is just right, which is why I use this bow as my main bow now; no more hand strain!

Fun fact: the makers of this bow custom made my very first pernambuco when I was a teenager! So they are in it for the long run and really know what it means to make a double bass bow that is comfortable and of professional quality for bassists.
