Key West Quintet by Xavier Foley

The Quintet by Xavier Foley is a beautiful piece — a real joy to play for any musician but specially for the double bass player. Foley draws on the spirit of American folk music, but he goes further: he dares to explore musical spaces born not only from our collective heritage but also from his own intimate, individual imagination. Bartók did something similar with European traditions — delving into the folklore of his land to discover new musical languages.

It would be exciting to explore this direction further.

For any composer, perhaps the most important thing is to find their audience — people who understand and love what they create. A shared language between composer and listener is a conditio sine qua non. But even more thrilling is when a composer dares to challenge the audience — to invite them into a new world of perception.
Because every piece of music is its own world.

Good Luck!!

Contemporary Classic

The piece is filled with joy throughout, with some calming and nostalgic parts in the middle. The main phrase is catchy with the feel of classical meets folk contemporary music. Sometimes I feel like Im in a fantasy rpg. I have listened to it at least 6 times. I hope I can play the bass part someday!

Key West = a hard key signature

I really like the Key West Quintet! I recently read it with my quintet, and it's a bit of a bear to sightread if you're not used to 6 sharps in the key signature :) That being said, it's a refreshing and relatively short piece that nevertheless feels substantial and worthy of being programmed. I really like the soul, jazz, and other assorted musical flavors that Xavier always infuses into his pieces. Bravo, and thank you for the download!
