The Exercise Book (Intermediate)
After spending a few days with Exercises, I am struggling to discern the point or goal, e.g., improving bowing? Greater facility of thumb position on lower strings? Intonation?
Hello!
My Exercises are designed to be fun drills to help build good technique. In order to improve you must master these exercises by focusing on intonation, which requires careful attention to fingering position.
'The Point' is that you are learning through experience. No book can directly give you perfect intonation and bowing like a magic pill from the pharmacy, however, with hours of dedication to these exercise that CHALLENGE you in a fun and approchable way, you will most likely developed improved overall technique over time.
When I started playing the bass, there was not much challenging pieces made SPECIFICALLY for the bass, so I played Bach Cello Suites and mainly music from the cello and violin to challange me as a player. This was a decent solution at the time, but I always wished there was challenging and fun music designed specifically for double bass players. This is why I write music. To not only expand the repertoire of the double bass, but also to help expand the double bassist skill by developing pieces FOR THE DOUBLE BASS that are rewarding to play and to develop higher skill level at the same time.
I sincerely hope you continue these Exercises as I truley believe that you will be more prepared for whatever you play next after mastering these challenging pieces.
